Experience

2009
I designed an iPhone app for The Guardian newspaper which was released December 2009. There was widespread acclaim for the aesthetics, architecture, UX and UI, and the app was number one selling app on the app store for it’s first week. It was and remains number 1 selling paid news app in the UK, and in several other countries.
I worked on the brief with the product manager, wireframed the app, detailed specific UI behaviour and designed final screens. My role extended to direction of development at various stages, and ensuring that the UI worked as specified. I also played an active role in developing Guardian mobile strategy.

2008
I devised and designed a Film review iPhone app, with The Guardian being the intended client. I designed it from concept and user journeys through to screens, and  made a demo using Keynote (which I showed at Apple). A small development company helped me to build a working prototype. I worked closely with the developer at every stage.

2005-9
The Guardian: Media, Society, Education, Technology, Office hours: Redesign and art direction of 5 weekly specialist sections,  after the transition to Berliner format in 2005
As art director of many sections I was working across multiple teams and regularly lliasing with several editors. I commissioned photography, illustration and information graphics, working closely with picture editors and artists to get the best results.
I designed key spreads and pages, and would oversee each team, suggesting and supervising changes needed on pages. My role was also to maintain and update the design of the sections.
Our approach on the Guardian was to offer the readers many ways into a page, therefore paying careful attention to the detail of furniture and navigation devices. All the detailed work was set within a carefully paced product which resulted from collaboration between myself and section editors.
